Ithaca College Television hosted a candidate debate between Republican Tom O’Mara and Democrat Leslie Danks Burke last Thursday, October 27th, and ICTV will re-broadcast the debate tonight at 9pm and keep it available for on-demand viewing.
ICTV Newswatch anchor Jay O’Brien hosted and moderated last week’s debate between the two candidates for New York State Senate in the 58th District, held in the newly renovated Studio B facility at Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications.
The incumbent O’Mara, born and raised in Horseheads, served in the New York State Assembly from 2004 until his election to State Senate in 2010. The former Chemung County district attorney points to his successful efforts to expand the region’s agricultural development, including local cheese and wine production, and has assembled an impressive list of endorsements from such diverse groups as local and statewide unions, police benevolent associations, and manufacturing and business industries.
Challenger Burke, a daughter of farmers who came to the Finger Lakes over a decade ago, serves on local boards including the TC3 Foundation, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, and the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation. She has been endorsed by several local democratic politicians and local unions. Burke did not respond to a request for campaign information from 14850 Magazine.
“Jay O’Brien did an outstanding job,” says Chris Wheatley, manager of TV and radio operations for Ithaca College. “Both candidates told us this was the most professional debate they’d participated in this season.”
