Subaru of America is donating 50 vehicles to Meals on Wheels programs around the country, and Foodnet Meals on Wheels of Tompkins County will receive one of them at an event in Ithaca this Tuesday, hosted by Subaru, Foodnet, and Maguire Family of Dealerships.
The all-wheel-drive 2018 Subaru Outback “will tremendously improve our ability to deliver meals to our older adult neighbors, especially during difficult weather conditions,” says Foodnet executive director Jessica Gosa. “On average each month, Foodnet drives 9,229 miles to deliver meals.”
Subaru’s donation to Foodnet Meals on Wheels will “replace a delivery vehicle well past its life expectancy,” making rural deliveries safer. The organization serves over 700 meals a day to more than 400 older adults, most of them homebound, offering both nutritious meals and companionship to these area residents, over 42% of whom live in rural areas.
The car-maker’s donation of 50 cars to 50 select Meals on Wheels programs in 39 states around the nation is to celebrate the 50th anniversary this year of Subaru of America, Inc. “We’re fortunate to have earned one here in Tompkins County for the work that we do,” says Foodnet’s Melissa Gingold.
Subaru has been supporting the national Meals on Wheels network for the last nine years, through its annual Share the Love philanthropic event. Ellie Hollander, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels America, says, “This latest act of care and kindness further underscores Subaru of America’s longstanding commitment to giving back to communities large and small.”
Ashley Greenlee at the Maguire Family of Dealerships says everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend Tuesday’s special delivery event. Subaru is just one of 18 automotive brands represented by Maguire’s ten dealerships around Central New York.
Tuesday’s event at the Space at GreenStar, from 4-5:30pm, will feature light refreshments and a chance to check out the vehicle before it hits the road this fall to begin deliveries on Foodnet’s Brooktondale route.
