Buffalo Street is closed to through traffic on Ithaca’s east hill for gas main work, and could be closed for several weeks. DDS is replacing NYSEG gas pipes under the street, and must connect the new main to service lines running to each building.
“These operations move along pretty well,” says City of Ithaca assistant superintendent of public works Ray Benjamin. He estimates “about one week to run a block of main, and one or two services per day.”
This week, the blocks both above and below Stewart Avenue in Collegetown are closed to through traffic. Flaggers are in place to assist residents on the affected blocks who need to drive to or from their driveways.
Unusually, the City of Ithaca did not inform businesses in the area of the road closure ahead of time, or distribute a release to area media outlets including 14850 Today. Contractor crew members at the site told us they estimate the work will be done within “about a month and a half.”
