An alert from the Cornell University Police Department says a stabbing was reported near the Stewart Avenue bridge within the City of Ithaca, between lower Collegetown and Cornell’s west campus.
“Several local law enforcement agencies responded to a reported stabbing at 418 Stewart Ave,” just south of the Stewart Avenue Bridge, at 7:43pm, according to an update from Cornell. The bulletin says “witnesses describe the perpetrators as two black males, one possibly wearing a red shirt and the other with a ‘man bun.'”
Police say the stabbing victim, a 27-year-old Town of Dryden resident, was visiting someone in the area and “observed subjects removing contents from his vehicle.” An altercation took place between the victim and “at least two male subjects,” according to the Ithaca Police Department, and he “received a knife wound to his leg.”
According to Ithaca authorities, the stabbing victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover. Cornell’s alert added that “suspects fled toward West Campus,” the residential area for upperclassmen downhill from Cornell’s central campus, and “one suspect may be armed with a handgun.”
Authorities initially suggested students and others in the area should “avoid the area or shelter in place,” but lifted that advisory at 9:27pm after searching the area. “Police believe suspects left the area but are still at large,” according to an update from Cornell. Cornell police say they are “adding extra patrols in the west campus area, and have increased the availability of Blue Light Escort Teams.”
Anyone on campus can request a Blue Light Escort by calling 607-255-7373 or picking up a Blue Light phone on campus. The service operates from 8pm to 2am every day during the fall and spring semesters. According to CUPD, “When a Blue Light Escort is requested, two members of the Cornell University Police Auxiliary accompany any member of the Cornell community or visitor to destinations on campus or near campus. If you are riding a bus, they will wait with you at the stop until the bus arrives. Blue Light Escorts are members of the Cornell community hired and trained by Cornell Police. Each escort wears a highly visible uniform and is in direct radio contact with Cornell Police.”
