Several police agencies searching for escaped suspect near Trumansburg

Several police agencies are engaged in a manhunt near Trumansburg for a suspect that we’ve been told “was in police custody but slipped the handcuffs” on Tuesday evening.

According to the Tompkins County 911 Dispatch Center, Trumansburg Police are searching the Village for a suspect, assisted by Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Ithaca Police Department officers, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, and NYS DEC Police. We’ve heard reports of helicopters searching the area from the air.

Ithaca Police Department spokesman Jamie Williamson confirms that “IPD officers are assisting in apprehending a subject near the village of Trumansburg border.” He says, “It’s not our investigation so I can’t comment any further.”

We’re told police agencies have brought in K-9 units to help search the area around Smith Woods for a suspect who “has military training.” The area being searched is in the southeast corner of the Village of Trumansburg, near the Shur-Save supermarket and Trumansburg Fairground.

Tompkins County Dispatch told us they have not been told the suspect is armed and dangerous, or that Trumansburg residents should remain indoors, but we would expect delays for those driving in the area.
