City of Ithaca selling abandoned vehicles this week at towing lots

The City of Ithaca has over a dozen vehicles for sale this week pursuant to New York State’s “abandoned vehicles” law. Sales will take place at two towing lots the morning of Wednesday, September 28, and included in the car auctions this week are sedans, crossovers, SUVs, and even a motor home.

Under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1224, local authorities may take ownership of a vehicle, and dispose of it as they see fit, under a variety of circumstances including a vehicle parked on a public road without license plates, a vehicle parked illegally for a certain length of time, or a vehicle left at a towing company lot or other impound facility for a certain length of time.
