A young man named Deany is fighting aggressive brain tumors, and lots of local musicians are teaming up for a benefit concert at The Loft on Sunday afternoon, September 17th.
A diagnosis of DIPG, or Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, came in mid March after six-year-old Deany woke up with symptoms similar to a lazy eye, family members say. Radiation treatments help to slow the growth of the tumors, but there’s no approved cure.
Parents Ashley and Dean decided to take Deany to Mexico to pursue a clinical trial that’s not available in the United States, and friends and family have supported them with online fundraisers at YouCaring and GoFundMe.
The treatments have required lots of expensive travel. Deany just returned from a treatment in Mexico about a week ago.
Dolce Delight on Ithaca’s south hill hosted a lemonade and ice tea stand raising money for Deany’s family in June. The lemonade stand was run by one of Deany’s classmates who happens to know Christina Dixon at Dolce Delight. The Dock hosted a musical fundraiser in June, as well.
This Sunday’s event at The Loft on the second floor of the Carriage House Café on Stewart Avenue starts at 3:30pm, with live music from 4-9pm:
- Sam Swanson of Handsome Young Ladies
- vinegar williams
- Mijaíl Martínez
- Angela Marion & Leon Arguello
- Vee Da Bee
- NEO Project
It’s an all-ages event, with kids’ activities on the patio, a raffle and silent auction, and food available for purchase from Luna Inspired Street Food. There’s a $10 suggested donation at the door, and all proceeds will go to Deany’s family.
