Those trucks clogging roads around Ithaca were detoured off I-81

We’re hearing that the huge trucks getting stuck or slowing down traffic in a few spots around the Ithaca area weren’t supposed to be here. They were diverted off Interstate 81 and had to find alternate routes.

The “wide load” tractor trailers hauling what looked like huge cylinders turn out to have been transporting the vertical portions of large wind turbines to a wind farm site in Pennsylvania, we’re told. The route from Quebec to Pennsylvania should have taken the trucks down I-81, which can easily handle them, but they were diverted off the Interstate due to construction along the route.

One truck was stuck on the Route 13 on-ramp at North Triphammer Road, after reportedly exiting the highway to test its brakes. Another was spotted near Pete’s Grocery in the west end, near the former Octopus intersection and the approach to Route 79.

We hear the trucks in this squadron have been causing similar traffic issues in other areas, like Auburn and Skaneateles, throughout the day.

A reader tells us the truck that was stuck at Triphammer Road is no longer there.
