The Ithaca Farmers Market has faced a worsening parking shortage at its main Steamboat Landing location, but the Maguire Family of Dealerships has stepped forward with a solution, at least for now.
The local auto sales company, which operates many car dealerships in Ithaca and around Central New York, has hopes to build a new dealership lot on its Carpenter Park property. In the meantime, they have a large parking lot that’s not being used, and they’ve offered it to farmers market shoppers.
When the main parking lot at Steamboat Landing fills up, parking lot attendants will guide shoppers to the Carpenter Park lot, via an access road across from Aldi.
The farmers market lost some parking capacity to the City of Ithaca’s waterfront trail project, and then was abruptly told earlier this year by city officials that shoppers would not be allowed to park on the side of the 3rd Street Extension any more.
Ithaca Farmers Market is open at Steamboat Landing on Saturdays from April to December, Sundays from May to November, and now Thursday nights during the summer. They have satellite markets in Downtown Ithaca on Tuesdays and on East Hill on Wednesdays.
Maguire also donates 10% of proceeds from oil changes at all of its dealerships to a different community non-profit organization each month.
