Tompkins health officials looking for anyone who may have touched rabid bat

After a bat captured on Tuesday evening in Ithaca’s Fall Creek neighborhood tested positive for rabies, the Tompkins County Health Department wants to know if anyone may have touched it.

tompkins-healthThe bat was contained at the corner of Geneva and Cascadilla Streets, north of Downtown Ithaca, and taken for testing by the New York State Rabies Laboratory.

“Untreated rabies in humans is fatal,” the Tompkins County Health Department said in a statement on Thursday. If you, someone you know, or a pet may have touched the bat or otherwise come in contact with it, please contact the Tompkins County Health Department right away at 607-274-6600 or 274-6688.
