This month, the American Red Cross says they’re offering a $5 Amazon gift card to entice blood donors to come help with the current urgent need for blood and platelet donations. Several donations are scheduled in and around Ithaca over the next few weeks.
“Busy schedules are leading to less blood on the shelves,” say Red Cross representatives, who say donations tend to drop over the summer months as families travel. Donation opportunities in the next few weeks are a chance to help keep the supply intact.
Upcoming blood drives near Ithaca include at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Burleigh Drive from 8am-noon and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Locke Road in Groton from 8am-noon on August 13; the Tabernacle Baptist Church on North Cayuga Street from 11am-5pm on August 16; Southside Community Center on South Plain Street from 2-7pm on August 17; and the Ramada on North Triphammer from 11am-5pm and Shops at Ithaca Mall from 1-6pm on August 19.
The Red Cross says donors through August 31 will receive an email with a $5 Amazon.com gift code and redemption instructions within two weeks.
Walk-in donors are welcome when there’s room, but the American Red Cross is grateful when people make donation appointments in advance at www.redcrossblood.org. Anyone who’s healthy, age 16 and over, and weighing 110 pounds or more, can give blood.
Regular donations of all blood types are needed, but type O negative donations are especially helpful. O is the “universal donor;” that blood type can be given to nearly any patient. Donors always get a snack and something to drink to begin replenishing their fluids and blood sugar levels.
