This Friday marks the fifth annual Cops on Top fundraiser at dozens of Dunkin’ Donuts locations around New York, supporting Special Olympics, and five locations in the Ithaca area are participating, including DD shops in Dryden and Lansing.
Special Olympics volunteers will be on hand with lots of information about athletic events featuring athletes with intellectual disabilities, and taking donations. Anyone making any donation will receive a coupon for a free cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, and anyone donating $20 or more will get a Cops on Top t-shirt.
Last year’s one-day event netted over $42,000 for the cause, and provided funding to sponsor 142 Special Olympics athletes from New York. Cops on Top is a joint effort of Dunkin’ Donuts and police agencies across the state, including Cornell University Police Department and New York State Police Troop C.
Cassandra Rucker, director of development for Special Olympics of New York, says Southern Tier events raised $15,146.91 last July, and Central Region events raised $27,517.37. In Ithaca, the Pine Tree Road location raised $889.70 and the Meadow Street location raised $982.77. Both were participating for the first time. The Norwich location of Dunkin’ Donuts was the top fundraiser for last year, with $2,548.24.
Cops on Top will be held from 6-11am at participating Central New York and Southern Tier locations, including Ithaca’s Pine Tree Road, Elmira Road, and Meadow Street locations; Lansing’s Peruville Road store; Dryden’s North Street location; Freeville’s Dryden Road location; Homer’s South West Street store; and Cortland’s Clinton Street location.
