Local bakery hopping on the Pokemon Go bandwagon with custom cupcakes

When you’re a custom bakery, you’re probably good at adapting quickly to what your customers need. That’s what happened in Ithaca this week when a customer approached Lona Cakes to provide some Pokemon-themed cupcakes to go along with the current craze.

Lona Cakes is a custom bakery that opened just last month at the Community Corners shopping center in Cayuga Heights. Baker Lona Isenberg-Gutchess and her sister Anna Isenberg teamed up after Lona, with a love of baking inspired by her German Oma, or grandmother, decided to take what started as a baking hobby beyond her home kitchen. (She’s been doing custom wedding cakes and small-batch baking since 2009.)

They baked a batch of “Pokeball” cupcakes yesterday, and whipped up these gorgeous Pokemon cupcakes as a special order for a customer today. You can’t have these, but they say there are some Pokeballs left! Yes, there are Pokestops nearby, and the bakers say, “we caught a Pokemon on our sink this morning.”

Of course there’s a full selection of full-size cakes for special occasions, cupcakes for a party, and mini cupcakes or a slice of cake when you just need a bite. Red velvet, Nutella, lemon raspberry, cheesecake, plenty of chocolate, as well as tempting truffles.

The Lona Cakes shop is open 8am-5pm on weekdays, and they’ve just added Saturday hours, 9am-3pm, beginning this week. There are always baked goods (and freshly brewed Gimme! Coffee) for sale, and custom orders are welcome.

Find Lona Cakes at 903 Hanshaw Road in the Community Corners plaza, find them at www.lonacakes.com, or give them a call at 607-339-0350 and tell them you heard about them here.
