The playground on the Ithaca Commons, which opened last summer as the downtown pedestrian plaza was finished, is closed this week for resurfacing!
City officials say the playground will be closed today through Wednesday, June 29, while the surface is removed and re-poured, then allowed to cure. The surface is solid but slightly squishy, making it a little safer to fall on (and a lot comfier for grownups to stand on).
According to City Clerk Julie Holcomb, “There were some defects in the product that we want to make sure are addressed before the warranty expires.”
“The surface seams are damaged,” according to Frank Nagy, from Ithaca’s Streets and Facilities Division, “causing them to separate due to water penetration.”
“Instead of trying to lift the seam to refill them, it is a much better fix to replace it completely and the time and labor is actually less expensive to remove and replace than to try and do a patch job,” Frank tells us.
The playground will be open again in time for the weekend, as squishy-floored as ever.
