Ithaca Fire Department hosting free event to check child car seats

Is your child’s car seat connected right? Is it the right size for your toddler? Does your 8-year-old pass the safety belt fit test? Get these questions and more answered at Ithaca Fire Department’s upcoming Car Seat Check Event.

Are your children in a proper car seat for their age, height, and weight?

Are your children in a proper car seat for their age, height, and weight?

IFD is one of several local agencies with occasional events like this, and this time the opportunity to check your car seat for correct attachment and correct size for your kid is Friday afternoon June 24 from 1-3pm at IFD’s fire training center at 330 Pier Road.

Firefighters and certified child passenger safety technicians will be there to help you decide whether your 15-month-old should be in a forward-facing or rear-facing car seat, or whether your bigger kid is big enough to skip the car seat entirely.

All front seat occupants must wear a seat belt, regardless of age. The driver is responsible for passengers under 16. All rear seat passengers under 16 must wear a seat belt. All children under 4 years old must ride in a federally approved child safety seat. Children 4-7 years of age must be properly secured based on their height and weight.

The Ithaca fire training center at 330 Pier Road is near the Newman municipal golf course, off Willow Avenue near the Haunt, across Route 13 from the high school and middle school complex.

Can’t make it this Friday? Parents are always welcome to contact Ithaca Fire Department for an appointment with their certified car seat installation team, says Ithaca Fire Department Lt. Tom Basher. Basher says parents can call 607-272-1234 to set up a time to meet with a car seat technician.

The car seat check event is sponsored by Ithaca Fire Department and the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee!
