Crews from several area fire departments returned to the site of Wednesday’s barn fire on Mount Pleasant early Thursday morning as the fire rekindled.
We’re told Varna, Etna, McLean, Freeville, and Dryden have all sent firefighters and equipment back to the scene, starting at about 4:45 this morning. Etna fire police captain Don Preston tells us crews were working to extinguish hot spots until after midnight last night.
Departments on the scene last night included Etna, Speedsville, Brooktondale, Varna, Slaterville Springs, Dryden, McLean, Freeville, and Cayuga Heights. Firefighters deployed a portable water container, essentially a movable pond, and filled it with water to provide a water supply for hoses.
Property owner Jim Reed told us last night he believed all of the animals in the barn were able to escape as the fire started. Reed says firefighters arrived quickly enough that a house near the barn didn’t appear to have sustained serious damage.
Update: A family member has launched a GoFundMe page to help with immediate expenses to care for the animals and begin cleanup and rebuilding.
