The folks at Collegetown Bagels narrowed last month’s sandwich idea entries down to three finalists, and Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick picked the winner of the Hunger Hero sandwich contest this afternoon.
Today’s contest winner was Vanessa O’Connor, whose Chicken & Waffles sandwich features breaded chicken, hot sauce, maple syrup, and cheddar cheese between two waffles.
The Hunger Hero contest is a joint effort between CTB and the United Way of Tompkins County, with community members submitting sandwich ideas and then the mayor getting to pick the best one.
The winning sandwich design will go on sale at Collegetown Bagels and Ithaca Bakery outlets around town, and proceeds will go the United Way to help fund local food banks and other hunger-related causes. (The two runners-up will be available, too, so customers can vote on their favorite.)
The first Hunger Hero contest winner two years ago was Brandon Fortenberry, whose “Myrick Mac & More” offered both meaty and vegetarian versions, topped with macaroni & cheese.
