Tasting and judging this Thursday for Hunger Hero sandwich

The entries are in, and Collegetown Bagels is hosting a tasting event on Thursday afternoon for the next Hunger Hero sandwich winner to benefit the United Way!

The Hunger Hero contest is a joint effort between CTB and the United Way of Tompkins County, with community members submitting sandwich ideas and then the mayor getting to pick the best one. The winning sandwich design will go on sale at Collegetown Bagels and Ithaca Bakery outlets around town, and proceeds will go the United Way to help fund local food banks and other hunger-related causes.

Starting at 5:30 this Thursday, May 25, the Hunger Hero tasting event will be at Collegetown Bagels downtown at 203 North Aurora Street. Everyone is welcome to come, and there will be samples available, with a suggested donation of a canned food item or other non-perishable food, or a monetary donation to the United Way.

Judging this year’s competition will be a representative from Loaves and Fishes, one from Foodnet Meals on Wheels, and 14850 Dining’s own Mark Anbinder. There are four finalist sandwiches out of a total of 76 entries submitted for the contest.

Last year’s contest winner was Vanessa O’Connor, whose Chicken & Waffles sandwich featured breaded chicken, hot sauce, maple syrup, and cheddar cheese between two waffles.

The first Hunger Hero contest winner three years ago was Brandon Fortenberry, whose “Myrick Mac & More” offered both meaty and vegetarian versions, topped with macaroni & cheese.
