Former Vice President Joe Biden is speaking at Cornell this weekend, and the famous ice cream fan is getting his very own Cornell Dairy ice cream flavor. The name was announced Tuesday! Students will help dish up “Big Red, White & Biden” while the veep is in town.
Cornell Dairy folks actually contacted the University of Delaware to see what VP Biden’s favorite ice cream flavor was, and learned it was vanilla with chocolate chips. As the dairy plant began producing ice cream for the weekend, Cornell’s Ag School held an “impromptu ice cream naming contest” to pick a name.
Biden is speaking at Cornell’s Convocation, 12 noon to 1pm on Saturday afternoon, May 27th, at Schoellkopf Field. Tickets are not required, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Gates open at 9am.
After that, Cornell is holding an Ice Cream Social on their Arts Quad from 2-3pm, where they’ll be dishing up the kosher ice cream for graduating students and their families and guests.
Cornell Dairy says it’s the first time they’ve used actual chocolate chips, rather than chocolate shavings as usual, in making their ice cream.
Cornell’s actual graduation ceremony is on Sunday, May 28. By tradition, Cornell invites guest speakers the day before, but not for graduation itself. Cornell says in the event of severe weather, the speech will be moved indoors, and only members of the graduating class will be able to attend. The Convocation will also be streamed online and televised locally on Spectrum, formerly Time Warner Cable.
Cornell Dairy made about 70 three-gallon tubs to serve this weekend and in the Cornell Dairy Bar while supplies last, as well as a few hundred pints people can buy to take home. Cornell ice cream pints are sold at the Dairy Bar and at Cornell Store locations on campus and downtown.
