Two juvenile suspects were arrested in connection with Saturday night assaults that sent two victims to Cayuga Medical Center for treatment of “significant” injuries, say police.
A statement from the Ithaca Police Department says officers responded to the 400 block of Floral Avenue and the 600 block of Chestnut Street at about 9:30pm Saturday “for a report of victims of an assault.” The two victims were located nearby.
Two suspects were arrested but their names are being withheld “as they are under the age of 18,” says IPD spokesperson Sgt. Derek Necheporek. The two juveniles are charged with gang assault in the 1st degree, unlawful imprisonment in the 1st degree, and strangulation in the 2nd degree, according to the IPD statement.
IPD spokesperson Officer Jamie Williamson stresses that police can “charge a person with gang assault if they are aided by two other people.” The “gang assault” charge refers to “a gang of people instead of a gang as seen in a Hollywood movie,” he says.
Williamson tells us that the victims and attackers did know each other. The victims sustained “significant” injuries, “but their condition is stable.”
IPD asks that anyone who might know more about the incident, or with other information that might aid their investigation, contact them through police dispatch at 607-272-3245, the administration line at 607-272-9973, the Crimestoppers Tipline at 607-697-0333, or the anonymous online tip form.
