Do you have what it takes to design the next winning Hunger Hero sandwich? Collegetown Bagels is taking entries until May 8 for the annual fundraising sandwich contest.
The Hunger Hero contest is a joint effort between CTB and the United Way of Tompkins County, with community members submitting sandwich ideas and then the mayor getting to pick the best one. The winning sandwich design will go on sale at Collegetown Bagels and Ithaca Bakery outlets around town, and proceeds will go the United Way to help fund local food banks and other hunger-related causes.
Last year’s contest winner was Vanessa O’Connor, whose Chicken & Waffles sandwich featured breaded chicken, hot sauce, maple syrup, and cheddar cheese between two waffles.
The first Hunger Hero contest winner three years ago was Brandon Fortenberry, whose “Myrick Mac & More” offered both meaty and vegetarian versions, topped with macaroni & cheese.
This year’s final tasting and judging event will be May 13 on the Commons, and canned good or monetary donations can mean access to the tastings.
