The City of Ithaca says a contractor is starting asphalt restoration work on Hector Street this Thursday that will last for about a month. Hector Street is Route 79 on Ithaca’s west hill.
The Department of Public Works said on Friday afternoon that DDS Utilities, Inc., will be acting as a contractor for NYSEG to patch asphalt cuts that were made in the course of previous gas line work along Hector Street.
The affected portion of Route 79 runs from Floral Avenue at the foot of west hill near the Cayuga Lake Inlet up to Vinegar Road, which connects to Route 96.
Beginning on Thursday, April 28, the City says, the uphill (westbound) lane “may be closed” between 7am and 7pm on Monday through Friday, for about a month. Flaggers will direct traffic alternating through the downhill (eastbound) lane. Both lanes will be open during non-work hours, and throughout the process, drivers should expect delays and rough pavement.
The City says the work should be done by the end of May, “weather permitting.”
