A dozen or so vehicles, including a lumber truck and a bus carrying Cornell students back from spring break, were involved in a series of collisions on Interstate 88 on Sunday afternoon. Otsego County officials say no fatalities have been reported.
Otsego County officials report that the Schenevus Fire Department and EMS personnel were assisted at the scene by several neighboring fire departments, and supported via mutual aid, by responders from Oneonta, Westford, Milford, East Worcester, Worcester, West Oneonta, Otego, Cooperstown, Richmondville, Cobleskill, and Schoharie County.
The pileup occurred in gusty weather after a night of unseasonal snowfall, with occasional whiteout conditions. The incident occurred near the 72 mile marker, and near exit 18, on I-88 westbound.
“The crash seems to have happened at 20-30mph speeds,” says Ottilie Beardsley, a trained emergency responder who was on her way back to her Ithaca home when she came upon the scene. The outcome would likely have been much worse “if everyone had been going the speed limit,” she says.
All told, 12-15 vehicles were involved, says Beardsley, “including the bus and three trucks, and a couple of people who drove off the road to avoid the crash.” She assisted local responders in caring for injured crash victims at the scene, some of whom were taken to nearby hospitals.
