John Martin, who cooked around Ithaca for decades, passed away Monday

A man who made a lifetime career  of cooking at restaurants in and around Ithaca, John Martin passed away on Monday afternoon at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. He was 76.

John had most recently cooked at the Lincoln Street Diner (formerly Mae’s Little Kitchen, Bud’s Diner, and Ziffy’s Diner) for about 35 years, according to owner Chris O’Brien.

“He was a familiar face at the diner for over 30 years,” said Chris, “and I had the privilege to work with him for the last 13.”

Before that, he had cooked at the State Diner and Sunny Side Restaurant for many years, had his own place in Seneca Falls, and had cooked at Cornell University.

Chris says the Lincoln Street Diner will host a gathering in John’s memory on Monday, March 27th, from 4-6pm.
