Sometimes we all need a little extra motivation to get out in the winter, and First Friday Gallery Night is a great excuse to do some exploring of Downtown Ithaca in search of some new art this Groundhog Day.
January’s First Friday Gallery Night was postponed due to extreme cold in the forecast, and the second Friday wasn’t much better weather-wise. This Friday night could be snowy, but scheduled events should proceed as planned, including refreshments available at many participating locations.
Some of the Gallery Night venues are actual galleries, like the CAP ArtSpace in Center Ithaca, which this month features photographs by Julia Gray using a spherical “lensball” to create stunning effects, or the State of the Art Gallery at 120 West State Street, offering part two of its Members Show.
Others are local stores that focus mostly or entirely on selling items other than art, such as Sunny Days, with a show of Yael Saar’s textured painting, or Handwork, this month showing jewelry by member Charlotte Walsh.
Venues this month also include Press Cafe, the Hilton Garden Inn, the History Center, New Roots Charter School, and Circus Culture, which will bring circus arts to life. This month’s Tompkins County Public Library opening is even followed by a dance party at nearby Lot 10.
