A Friday night a cappella performance by The Funx at the Hangar Theatre this week will serve as a soulful start to 2017 and as a fundraiser for the Actor’s Workshop of Ithaca. The show will also feature a sampling of AWI’s acting talents.
It’s a reunion for The Funx, formed in Ithaca but since spread across the continent. “With arrangements and vocal percussion from The Sing-Off arranger and group coach Robert Dietz, and the incredible soaring tenor of Nate Tao from American Idol,” says the concert announcement, “The Funx has a complete arsenal of a cappella weapons. Sexy soulstress Ariel Arbisser is a vocal coach, actress, and a CARA-winning soloist who sings in local The Jeff Love Band. Long-time collaborator and funky bass, Crawford Doran, and powerhouse singer-songwriter and local musician, Harry Nichols, round out this pop/soul vocal band.”
Since 2001, the Actor’s Workshop of Ithaca has helped train countless actors in the performing arts, using the Sanford Meisner Technique to build acting and audition skills. Many students “have gone on to become fairly well-known,” says co-director and acting instructor Katie Spallone, who herself is a graduate of the program and has performed in productions with AWI and the local Homecoming Players troupe.
In addition to her efforts with The Jeff Love Band and The Funx, Ariel Arbisser is a teaching assistant for the Actor’s Workshop of Ithaca, and helped to bring about this week’s show. Last year, The Funx put on a similar show to raise money for the Running to Places youth theatre program.
$15 tickets are available at hangartheatre.org, by phone at 607-273-ARTS, or at the door for the 7:30pm show on Friday, January 6th at the Hangar Theatre on Taughannock Boulevard near Cass Park.
